Why RaiderComm Works for Every Communications Major - The CMI Perspective

By: Lauren de Ybarrondo

Here's why I chose Creative Media Industries as my major in the College of Media and Communication. I remember that hot summer day in 2016 when my girlfriends and I bought our tickets to the hottest concert in town, yet it wasn’t just a concert; it was so much more than that. Free Press Summer Fest was the one and only music festival that took place in Houston, Texas. It was all the rave for music lovers of all ages, showcasing a variety of artists of all different genres playing at one place sounded like a dream, and it was.

FPSF’16 was the first music festival I attended that completely changed my life. The combination of art, music, and food all at one place being celebrated felt like a dream come true. Ever since then I attended every concert and festival I could, and that’s when I realized the only thing that truly made me happy was live music, specifically music festivals.

After coming to this self-realization I decided that one day I will create my own music festival or, at the very least, work for one. So I did some research to see how I can make this dream possible. Now, I always knew that I wanted to attend Texas Tech so I looked into all the different majors they offered. That’s when I found Creative Media Industries (CMI). CMI is offered in the College of Media and Communications and covers everything from photography, videography production, graphic design, social media to creative directing. Creative directing caught my eye and I realized that is exactly what I want to learn and what I need to become to create my own festival.

Picking this major lead me to join RaiderComm. RaiderComm is not just for Public Relations Majors; it is offered to every major in the College of Media and Communication which allowed me to have this amazing opportunity of gaining experience working with real-life clients, expressing my creativity through content creation, and the gaining the skills required to manage an account team. Joining RaiderComm has ultimately given me the professional experience I need to land that dream job of creative directing in the near future.
