Why I Chose to Join RaiderComm

By: Emma Crowder

When I first began my college journey, I had no idea that public relations even existed as a career or area of study. During my second semester of college, I took a speech class and realized that I really enjoyed communicating with large audiences.

Shortly after, I joined the newspaper at South Plains College. This is when I learned about public relations and how it combines many different areas of communication and creativity to build long-lasting relationships with all types of audiences. There are many reasons that I am so attracted to this profession. One reason is that public relations is about heart, authenticity and reputation. Some of my personal values include honesty, integrity, empathy, open communication and loyalty. Public relations as a profession runs on values such as these. In the field of public relations, attitudes and opinions are constantly changing, and there are new opportunities for creativity and critical thinking every day. The need for transparency from brands and organizations, as well as individuals, is evident. I believe that PR practitioners have the power to create a credible reputation for brands by presenting consistency, reliability, clear and honest communication and more.

Deciding to choose public relations as my major area of study when I came to Texas Tech ranks as one of the best decisions I have made throughout my college career. When I first learned about Texas Tech’s student-run PR agency, RaiderComm, I immediately knew it was an amazing opportunity that I could not pass up. It is because of my love for public relations, and everything that it involves, that I am excited to have the opportunity to be a member of RaiderComm. Here, I can gain experience working with clients, as well as other students and professionals. I hope that by being a member of the RaiderComm Agency team, I will be able to expand my industry knowledge, advance my abilities of working with a team and continue to develop my skills in PR.
