What Leadership Truly Is

By: Emily Jellison

Serving as Agency Director of RaiderComm has been one of the most rewarding opportunities I have ever experienced at Texas Tech.  When I first consolidated with RaiderComm in 2022, I was an eager sophomore looking for any organization that I could get engaged with. What made RaiderComm solitary was the dedication to the nonprofit’s causes and the relationships the teams were establishing. I learned skills just in my first semester and I knew there were more doors to be opened.

Meeting Dr. Davis for the first time was very comforting. She gives excellent guidance to all her students and made me feel confident I could be a poised RaiderComm member. Studying how Dr. Davis conducted RaiderComm was very inspiring as I could see how passionate she was for each and every student.

When the time came for the role of agency director to be passed down, I embraced it with open arms and knew I had to tackle it like no other leadership position I had before. I found myself having to answer complicated questions with not only authority but with empathy. Being a leader means putting others before yourself. I was pleasantly impressed to find how well each team took after their own and made successful choices. As I come to my last semester serving as Agency Director, I hope whoever follows will continue to serve as a trailblazer and be passionate about everything RaiderComm and Dr. Davis provide for each member and prospective student. Passion is what I have found to be the best emotion associated with success and inspiration.
