The Importance of Experience & Connections

By Maddie Edwards

When I started RaiderComm I came with the intention of gaining professional experience. As a Public Relations and Strategic Communication Management major, I knew how essential it was to have experience working with clients. Throughout the semester, I have been able to work with multiple clients on various projects. Through time, I have quickly learned just how much planning is required for every project. For instance, over the past month I have created social media content, finished research memos, and practiced client meetings on various platforms. RaiderComm has allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom into actual experience.

Like other college students, I felt an immense amount of pressure to have a summer internship. Another reason that I joined RaiderComm was to set myself up for success in the process of applying for internships. Over the past six months, I have spent countless hours applying and being interviewed for summer internship opportunities. However, after joining RaiderComm I noticed a change. I felt much more qualified for the positions I was applying to because of the experience I gained through RaiderComm. In interviews, it felt easier to answer questions that involved my past experience. Through RaiderComm, I was able to gain a new sense of confidence about why companies should hire me.

Recently, I accepted a Corporate Communications intern position for the summer with Caterpillar, a Fortune 100 company that creates construction equipment materials. Products of Caterpillar are used by people and companies across the world. It feels so exciting knowing that all my hard work has paid off! Working with a company like Caterpillar is also so humbling as I know how competitive the application process was. As a matter of a fact, while being interviewed for this position, I realized that one of the interviewers was a sorority sister. What they say is true, connections always pay off.
