My first semester in RaiderComm was daunting at first. I tend to overthink and set high expectations for myself and the work I produce. I felt like I was underequipped, as it was also my first semester as a PR minor. However, as we began working with our clients, I realized that it didn’t matter how skilled I was but how willing I was to do the work, fail and learn along the way.
One of the things I learned in my first semester of RaiderComm was that building a relationship with your client is important. Business is the core of the relationship, but clients are more receptive when you show that you are invested in learning more about them and helping them achieve their goals. This also builds a level of credibility and trust between you and the client. Relationship building is also essential within your team. You are working closely with them most days so having a good relationship allows for better collaboration resulting in quality work.
Throughout the semester, I created a decent amount of graphics for one of our clients. Prior to RaiderComm, I had no experience in digital design and layout. By the end of the semester, I found that I had a knack for it which gave me greater confidence in my creative ability. More importantly, I found that I have great time management skills. I think it goes back to how devoted you are to your work which impacts the effort you’re willing to put in.
At the end of the day, I am glad I took the dive into unknown waters because I resurfaced as a better communications professional.
