Is the Power of Influencers Dying Down?

By: Natalie Amodio

Before I answer the question, “Is the power of influencers dying down?”, let’s establish what an influencer is. Influencers often have a niche, produce content for their audiences and have an established brand. Some examples of these niches include fitness, beauty and travel. Influencers have become a huge part of our society today and are on most social media platforms. They influence us through their posts, aesthetics and even the brands they support.

I believe the answer to the question is yes: the power of influencers is dying down. The shift of power has started to increase. This is because anyone can become an influencer and the development of new trends that constantly occur on social media.

One reason the power of influencers has died down is that anyone can become an influencer and in turn they have become micro-influencers. The development of micro-influencers creates a power shift in the influencer world. Micro-influencers, or influencers with less than 150,000 followers, encourage more engagement across social platforms than macro-influencers, or influencers with 100K to 1 million followers (Pignatelli, 2024; Nambakhsh, 2023).

Another reason the power of influencers has died down is because there are new trends becoming popular on social media. This can be a challenge for influencers because it can be hard for them to keep up and stick out (Radu, 2024).

In conclusion, influencers have become a big part of our society today, but the power that these influencers once held is starting to deplete. This depletion ultimately stems from the constant display of new trends that come with social media and anyone’s ability to become an influencer.
