I Took a Break and It Was Fine

By: Treasuremone Martinez

First, I would like to clarify that I’ve taken more the one break. I’ve taken a few, quite a few actually. College is hard and exhausting, and sometimes you just need a break! Nothing that anyone tells you about college can truly prepare you for it. Especially when you are a first-generation student.

As a first-gen student myself, I’ve faced a lot of obstacles that most of my peers didn’t. I remember on my first big break from college I was overwhelmed and disappointed in myself. I wasn’t sure if I was making the right decision or not, but I knew the path I was on for college wasn’t the right one for me. So, I took some time off and worked while I spent time trying to figure out what would work for me.

When it finally came to me, I could feel my life changing for the better almost instantly. I took some summer classes to improve my GPA and changed my major to public relations and strategic communication management. Since then, I’ve taken some great classes with great professors who have helped me out along the way. Even though sometimes it feels like I’m so far behind everyone, I know that I made the right decision for myself!

I’m not telling you that a break will fix all your problems, but they might fix a few of them. Take that break if you need to, and don’t compare yourself to other students because no one really knows what they’re doing. We’re all just winging it, so make the choice that works best for you and know that you aren’t alone. <3
