Get Involved on Campus!

By: Janelle Gallego

Around 700 student organizations exist on Texas Tech’s campus. More than 20 organizations are directly from COMC. When I was a freshman, I knew I needed to get involved. Back then I didn’t know just how important and helpful getting involved was; I just knew I wanted to make the most of my experience here.

I became marketing chair for my old sorority, ZTA, and gained a good amount of experience for my future career and knowledge on how to utilize the SUB’s resources. I tabled in the Free Speech Arena by the SUB I got to meet tons of people and make their day a little better with free goodies. COVID hit and it was so hard to get back on campus. Once we were finally allowed, I had three tabling events left.

After COVID, I knew I wouldn’t let anything else take from my college experience. I went to the student organization fair during welcome week in COMC. (I highly suggest anyone reading utilizes those! There are organizations for any hobbies and interests you have in COMC!). I saw so many I wanted to join, but time could only allow me so much.

I joined PRSSA, a PR student organization, and I got to meet so many successful professionals from the PR world. After a semester, I became the Historian for the club, and now I am the president for my last year of college.

Not just student organizations, but student events too. Utilize the career fairs, utilize the career center, and utilize everything you can! I heard about the Career Development Conference during class, and I went as a junior. I was a little young to go, but I met PR professionals and got to grow my network. I knew someone who got an internship right there at the event! Not only that, but I met classmates who like to get involved like me. That’s how I discovered RaiderComm. Allison, the director of RaiderComm, explained how we work with real clients and gain knowledge for our future careers.

I still have a year left, but because of all my experience here on campus, I feel ready to start my career now. I can’t wait to see what more I’ll be involved in next semester, and how prepared I’ll be at graduation!
