Dear First-Generation Students,
I am here to tell you that we see you, we hear you, and we are here for you. The Texas Tech Community has established its support for first-generation college students by acknowledging National First-Generation College Student day on November 8th. At Texas Tech, year-round opportunities like mentorships, scholarships, programs, and activities are available at the tip of your fingers. As a first-generation student myself, I believe it’s necessary for me to remind my peers to utilize the resources and realize the importance of participating throughout your college experience. Luckily, even with a socially distant society, peers just like you and me can still connect through the virtual world.
To many this isn’t just a title, it is a meaning of change, accomplishment, and even growth. Remember, being first-generation does not define you, it is one of your many great characteristics. Use this characteristic to guide yourself, find yourself, and expose yourself to the world. Although we are unified through this characteristic, everyone has a unique story that helps shape what being a first-generation college student means to them. This diversity in our unified community calls for respect in all aspects, at all times.
