Creating CreateAthon

By Sabrina Ritchie

When looking at the overarching learning experience that the RaiderComm PR Agency provides, working towards creating the successful event CreateAthon was by far the most enriching and stressful thing I have been a part of.

For the first time, the Department of Public Relations and Strategic Communication Management hosted a CreateAthon. This was a 24-hour creative marathon to support three incredible local nonprofits. A group of eleven students were broken up to aid one of these three nonprofits in any communications, marketing, or branding needs they wanted to undergo. YWCA, West Texas ALS Support Group, and Family Promise of Lubbock were the participating nonprofits.

To say this was an inspiring 24-hours is an extreme understatement. My group met the needs of Family Promise of Lubbock. This organization is a rehabilitation and stabilization center for individuals who have experienced homelessness in any form or fashion. I had the privilege of corresponding with the director prior to this event, and just to hear how grateful this outlet of help was to them made me want to fully commit to this effort. To think that a group of undergraduate students who are coming together with only their two to three years worth of experience in classrooms can have that big of an impact on a decades-old organization encouraged me to really start pursuing a career in nonprofit work.

No matter how difficult or discouraging the planning got, all of that turmoil was wiped away the second our clients walked in the door. Their passion for whatever cause they are involved in, was exponentially more important than our stress leading up to CreateAthon.

I am so grateful and excited to be a part of RaiderComm next semester and being offered the opportunity to lead this team as Account Manager. I will forever remember this experience and the individuals we touched over a span of only 24 hours!
