A Unique Opportunity

By: Charlize Cevallos

When telling my friends, family and peers that I chose to go to college for public relations, I received the same reaction from everyone: “That is the perfect major for you”, “I couldn’t see you doing anything else” and “You’re going to be great at that”.

All of these reactions, along with my interest in this career path, pushed me to want to get as involved with my major as possible. When my second semester rolled around, I decided to research ways for me to immerse myself in my major and RaiderComm immediately caught my eye. I thought it was such a unique opportunity where, as a freshman, I would be working for an agency, and in theory “practicing” for my future career. I was nervous that I would not have enough experience and after leaving my first class and I was still very intimidated.

I was, however, able to see the different sides of this agency that I did not know of before... the different roles we all have, the small and large tasks and learning about our clients in depth. We were told to treat this course not as a class, but as a job. This was a little scary to hear at first, but it was also exciting that I would be taking a class that didn't have the pressure of tests and quizzes, and instead, an opportunity to learn, grow and receive feedback from real clients and peers.

With the support of other students, along with Dr. Davis, I can say I am ready to take on the tasks given and represent our clients and agency as best as possible.
