By now, you're probably familiar with the basics of setting up a Zoom call: Find a quiet, clean place to have the interview, make sure your computer is working, and have some pants on. As thousands of businesses went from physical to virtual work environments because of COVID-19, A zoom interview is likely to be the new norm of being hired. If that's the case, these tips will be sure to help you with your next video interview.
1. Dress and Prepare As You would For an In-Person Interview
You should treat this like any other interview. Make sure to dress the part and remember to wear pants. You never know how much the camera can pick up! It is always better to overdress than underdressed for interviews. You should research the company and study the "about us" section. Find the organization's mission, values, and history. Have pen and paper ready. Think about questions you can ask the interviewer. The interviewer is looking for someone knowledgeable and passionate about the role.
2. Test Your Technology
You don't want any hiccups or glitches on such an important day. Test your equipment at least 1 hour before the interview. Make sure that the camera looks clear and that your mic is picking up sound. Call a friend and see if your zoom is working properly. If that's not possible, you can look into the zoom settings to see a preview of how you might look and see if your mic is working.
3. Have A Good Posture
If you happen to interview in the comfort of your own home, be mindful not to adopt a slouching carefree posture. It makes you look disengaged and unhappy to be interviewing for the position. Instead, try sitting at the edge of your seat and planting your feet straight into the ground. This will help keep your back straight and open up your vocal cords to sound more interested.
4. Keep Eyes Forward
It may feel strange and unnatural, but you need to look at the camera more than the person on the screen. Not looking at the camera can make you look like you are staring off into space. To best show your interviewer that you are engaged and attentive, smile into the camera.
5. Lighting, Lighting, Lighting!
Good lighting can help improve the way you look on-screen dramatically. We might not all have professional lighting equipment, but try opening a window and make sure you have the lights turned on in your room; you don't want to look like you are about to be dragged away into the darkness by some creature. Natural lighting will help your interviewer see a clearer picture of you. Your facial features, such as your eyes and smile, are more easily read with that extra lighting, so take the time to perfect your lighting! With these tips, you'll be sure to snag your dream job. Happy interviewing!
