My Time with the Lubbock Symphony

Linh Nguyen is a senior public relations major from Hanoi, Vietnam.

I didn’t know about the Inspiring Interns Program at the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) before meeting with my career counselor last December. When I applied, the deadline for an internship in the spring had already passed, but I was encouraged to apply for the summer. I decided to give it a chance in the summer, and it was a wonderful and valuable internship experience.

The LSO is preparing for its upcoming anniversary season, so I mostly assisted the Director of Marketing and Community Relations with promoting the LSO’s advertising program and contacting advertisers. Usually, my working day included looking through a list of companies to identify prospective advertisers, and calling a representative of the company to talk about the opportunity to promote themselves with the help of the LSO.

This internship gave me an opportunity to work in an integrated marketing and public relations environment. Interning at the LSO also gave me opportunities to network both inside and outside of the office. As an intern you learn many skills that you can apply later on. It was helpful to also work for people that would provide me with feedback to allow me to grow as a public relations professional.

I had a rewarding time at the LSO and learned a lot about marketing, advertising and networking. An internship provides knowledge and hands-on experience that can better prepare for the future in the career world. So be confident, be attentive and be humble, and you will have a great experience with whichever internship you get!
